Today marks the 44th birthday of who many Hip Hop aficionados consider to be one of the greatest, if not the greatest, rapper to ever live; Nasir Jones aka Nas.
As fans of Hip Hop, there are quite a few things that standout in our minds when we think of the most memorable songs ever made. When we think of a good story telling song, we may think of Children’s Story by Slick Rick or Stan by Eminem. If we’re thinking of posse cuts, maybe Scenario by A Tribe Called Quest and Leaders of the New School comes to mind. And if we’re thinking of club bangers, what better song to think of than 50 Cent’s In da Club?
On June 20th 2017 the Hip Hop community lost one of its most elite MCs, Prodigy of Mobb Deep. His unforeseen passing sent shockwaves throughout the Hip Hop landscape, and has left millions of Hip Hop fans in mourning as one of the most revered artist left us at only age 42.
Hip Hop is probably the only genre of music where spirited and passionate debates take place on the regular. And probably the most popular topic of debate is simply who are the best rappers ever? As Shawn Carter once said, maybe you’re arguing about whether it’s Biggie, Jay-Z, or Nas that is number 1. Or maybe you think 2pac is the G.O.A.T. Or maybe it’s Rakim who’s the best to ever do it. Whoever you have on your all-time top 10 list is sure to be different than the next man’s list, but there are some noteworthy MCs who don’t seem to get their just do when it comes to being mentioned amongst the elites.
